This weekend saw the first Bump party come to Fai in Aoyama. I’ve been to Fai a few times and really like the venue. The atmosphere is relaxed yet classy, with friendly staff and reasonable bar prices. One thing I really like is that due to the layout, the main rom never feels empty, even if it is less than full and yet is spacious enough to hold a sizable crowd.
The upstairs bar is also nice and cozy, though for some reason was really hot, probably due to someone turning down the air conditioning. The ‘VIP’ room is more than a little spartan but is unique in being quiet enough to actually hold a conversation in, something some other venues could learn from.
Probably the only complaint would be the savage lack of toilets which is made worse by the awful location (you have to squeeze past the bar and into a corridor so narrow both bathroom doors can’t be open at one time), suffice it to say there is always a queue for both men and women…
One thing Fai does have, at least in the main room is a solid sound system, which was put to good use keeping a lively crowd shaking it well into the morning. The ample power on offer was fully used by DJs AronT with his special blend of cathcy housey tunes, Russell Malon with a hard bass driven set and Yonosuke who closed out the night with a house set which was both dancable and ambient at the same time, quite delicious…
I’m pretty sure we’ll be at the next Bump, I’ll be sure to let you know when it will be and how to go about getting discounts on entry…

I wasn’t expecting much from this night on my way in, not being the biggest fan of house music (or for that matter Air as a club venue), however I was very pleasantly surprised. I had a great time to the funky sounds in the bar and Yass playing his blend of pseudo retro house in the main room.

HELL…
Nightnoises is back with a bang at Club Hell, we didn’t arrive until a little late so missed a fair amount of our host Mr Mu$ic’s set, but what we did catch involved some outstanding bootlegs smashed together in his superb style.
The headliner of the night however was the multi talented Shokkaboy, not content with playing bass with German electro group Nachlander, he is one of Europe’s most under rated producers and remixers and as we found out on Friday one hell of a DJ.

Playing a storming set including remixes of tracks which ranged from the sublime, such as Tiga — “Sunglasses at Night”, Depeche Mode -”John the Revelator” and Zombie Nation — “Kernkraft 4000″, to the frankly ridiculous including amazing re-rubs of Madness — “Our House” and Michael Jackson — “Thriller” Shokkaboy had a small but up for it crowd dancing like mad for a the entirety of his extended set…
So yes we shook it, we shook it oh so hard…

Yes Yes, It’s been a while, but other commitments, illness and downright laziness have put the site on hold. We’ve recently re-located to Tokyo also which had cutdownon the partying.
Tonight however is our big coming out party at Club Hell featuring our good friend from Germany DJ Shokkaboy (link is over to the right) and Mr Mu$ic as our host. Door’s open a 7pm more details over here

Everybody needs a little something to keep them going through until the weekend. This weeks mix comes from Charlie Fan Club who produced this mix for the No Love Lost Records mix tape project back in March. It’s an absolute scorcher with some really twisted electro beats which hopefully will put a big old smile on your face.
Grab it here
I’ve been out of the Euro/US music loops for a little while now, so I’m finding a lot of awesome DJ/producers who have blown up while I’ve been in the Tokyo bubble, I’m going to try to introduce as many as possible of them here. If you have suggestions of artists I should check out please do so over in the comments…

There are few things that will make me leave a party early and last night seemed to be an example of all of them. In chronological order:
22:50 – Arrive at Kings Cross Hotel,
22:54 – Walk into a room with people throwing beer, seriously who does this over the age of 15, the DJ deciding that mixing from Kylie to Guns n Roses was the way to go, sealed the deal.
22:57 – Leave the Kings Cross Hotel.
Now some may call me prudish but I have learnt from experience when a club isn’t my speed and this was one of those cases. I was kind of excited about being able to see PhDJ play but frankly even if he’d played the most blinding set ever I would have spent more time trying to dodge the drunken student crowd.
The second part of the night was at FAG at club 77 where things started off at a passable standard, with a pop centric electro set in effect, which was fine aside from the lack of even a hint of consistent tempo which seemed to jump between about 80 and 130bpm which made dancing tricky. Then again the number of people staggering and loitering on the dance floor drinking would have made any serious shaking it troublesome.
Things took a turn for the worse with a switch in DJs with an opening salvo of what I would describe as a hi-NRG megamix, we are talking 1990s style Out-There Brothers, Snap and Living Joy. I guess I was at the wrong party again. I stuck around at the bar and supped my cheap coke until about 3am when yet another change in sets still saw no outlaws but did see the dancability of the music drop even further (whilst I enjoyed The Presets back in March, there comes a time when it needs to be retired from the rotation) so I made a graceful exit and headed across town to my final stop of the evening…
With a name like Retro, I expected very little from my last stop where Erin was out at a hen’s night. It did not disappoint, with a selection of tunes from the early 90s. If nothing else no one threw drinks at me…
Ah well better luck next week, anyone have any recommendations for a nice dirty electro night in Sydney? If so hook a brother up in the comments…

Seing as how my Carl Cox guestlist place has evaporated and I don’t fancy paying $50 entry, tonight seems like tonight is a tossup between The Outlaws at Club 77 (again) and PhDJ and the Floorspace gang over at the Kings Cross Hotel.
Choices, Choices, Choices…. Seeing as it’s too late to throw this open to the comments I’ll probably just cruise by both.
Reports to follow.
